Everyone will get some of these symptoms at some time in their life, but the thing to look out for is if the symptoms appear regularly in response to contact with some particular substance.

If you suffer from any of these symptoms all the time, you should seriously consider the possibility that this may be due to an unidentifed allergy to something you are in contact with all the time.


What symptoms should you look for

Some of the better-known symptoms are:

  • Migraine and headaches.
  • Swelling of the tissues - in the nose, the lungs, the throat, the lips, the tongue, anywhere on the skin, tightness in the chest, breathing difficulties, bloating in the gut.
  • Production of mucous - runny nose, streaming eyes, cough, wheezing, discharge, hay fever, asthma, rhinitis, otitis media (ear infection), bronchitis.
  • Skin changes - redness, rash, urticaria (hives), dermatitis, psoriasis, dry skin, skin cracks, spots, ulcers in the mouth, eczema, itching.
  • Gastrointestinal changes - diarrhoea, constipation, bloating in the gut, flatulence, pain and inflammation in the intestines, Irritable Bowel Syndrome, Coeliac disease, indigestion, acid reflux.
  • Nausea, vomiting, cramping pains.
  • Bedwetting and bladder problems.
  • Hyperactivity (and hypoactivity -undue lethargy), ADD, ADHD, behaviour problems.
  • Joint and muscle problems - arthritis, unexplained aches and pains.

Other allergy symptoms which may not be so obvious are:

  • Unexplained sleepiness, e.g. after a meal.
  • Children or adults may be unable to concentrate or focus for very long.
  • Inability to sleep at night.
  • Feeling TATT (tired all the time).
  • Irritability.
  • Addiction or craving for certain foods.
  • Only wanting to eat a limited range of foods (especially children).
  • Dry eyes.
  • Dry throat.
  • Excessive thirst, especially in children. (Note: in adults this can also be a symptom of incipient diabetes).
  • Candida overgrowth - a fungal yeast infection causing bowel problems and thrush.
  • Snoring, snorting or nose-rubbing in children.
  • Dark bags under the eyes.
  • Pronounced crease under the eyes in children.
  • Red ears in children.
  • Recurrent sore throats or cough.
  • Swelling of lymph nodes in the neck.
  • Ringing in the ears.
  • Dandruff.
  • Stomach ache or pains
